Sunday Sip: Thanksgiving Priorities
Hello friends and welcome to Sunday Sip on Afternoon Ti. Each Sunday for the remainder of the year I plan to share a single idea, thought, or meaningful take-away in hopes that you’ll be encouraged and inspired as you prepare to enter the next new week of teaching.
We’ve made it to Thanksgiving break! Have you considered how you’re going to spend the next week? I’d encourage you to write down or put together a few ideas of things that you want to make a priority this week. They can be as simple or detailed as you like. Choose a few priorities and then plan time for them to happen.
My four priorities for my Thanksgiving break are:
My four priorities for my Thanksgiving break are:
- Take a nap a few days this week - I value my naps and I function well during the week because I take one every weekend. Yes, every weekend. I push myself hard all week long and on the weekends my body still wakes me up early because it’s used to it, but taking a nap is something I know I need and it helps me reenergize for the next week. I always feel great when I get one.
- Read a new book on my list of ‘want to reads.’. I have saved book titles on Goodreads of books that I want to read. I’m about to finish my current book - Lillian Boxfish Takes a Walk - and can’t wait to start another new book. My list keeps growing and I love keeping track of the books on Goodreads so I can always remember the titles of books that I want to read. Never a shortage!
- Binge ‘The Crown’ episodes on Netflix. The third season came out on the 17th, but I’ve been away at the AOSA National Orff Conference and haven’t seen many of them so I can’t wait to watch away!
- Spend time individually with each person in my family - Jeremy, Riley, and Julia. Jeremy told me this week that he feels like he hasn’t seen me in days. We have eaten dinner together every night as a family, but we’ve been like passing ships in the night and haven’t had a chance to really spend time together. I’m hoping to find ways to savor some time with each person individually and build some memories. Quality time with Julia usually looks like playing games, coloring, playing basketball. With Riley it looks like sitting together and talking, looking over her favorite Tik Tok videos from the people she follows (a great way to see the content she’s looking at and to have conversations - not lectures - about it all), and shopping together while drinking some kind of smoothie. With Jeremy it looks like going out to dinner. The idea for me is that I want to be intentional about individual time and I can’t wait to do this.
What is it that you want out of this week? Rest? Time with Family? Participating in an activity you love? If you’re not sure, I’ll post a link to a fun teacher quiz that I found online at we are teachers.com. According to my quiz results, I should spend time in nature - paddle a river, climb a mountain, or sit by a miniature fountain at my apartment. So there you have it! No matter where you are - home or traveling - take time to find ways to celebrate and enjoy your life. I hope you have a wonderful week of rest and a wonderful Thanksgiving.
